Why I Wrote This Book
목적지는 딱히 없었다. 그저 달리다 보면 어딘가에 닿겠지 싶었다. 알고 보니 미국은 그 작은 도시들 속에 살고 있었다. 화려한 마천루 뒤편에, 잘 닦인 고속도로 옆길에, 관광 안내서 한 귀퉁이에도 이름이 오르지 않는 그 마을들 속에, 미국의 역사가 숨 쉬고 있었다. 한 마을의 낡은 교회 하나가 남북전쟁의 상흔을 품고 있었고, 쇠락한 탄광촌 하나가 이민자들의 꿈과 좌절을 고스란히 간직하고 있었다. 도시마다 이야기가 있었고, 그 이야기들이 모여 이 거대한 나라, 미국을 만들고 있었다.
나는 그 이야기를 쓰고 싶었다. 두꺼운 역사책이 아닌, 편한 친구가 가볍게 꺼내는 이야기처럼. 읽는 분들이 부담 없이 페이지를 넘기다 보면, 어느새 미국이라는 나라가 조금 다르게 보이는 경험을 하셨으면 했다. 이민 20년, 50개 주를 떠돌며 내가 마주친 작은 도시들의 이야기를 이제 당신께 건넨다.

Why I Wrote This Book
When I travel, I get asked so many questions. "Why did this city end up like this?", "Why are those people doing that?", "Why do Americans think this way?" I tried my best to answer each and every one of those questions with everything I knew. However, the stories I could share in front of tourist attractions always lacked time and context.
That is why I wrote this book. The stories I wanted to tell during the trips but couldn't; the contexts I explained on-site but wanted to dive deeper into; and the answers to the questions that kept coming up across thousands of conversations with Korean travelers while traveling all over the United States. I have woven them all into a single book.
This book is not a travel guidebook. It is a story about America, seen from the perspective of someone who was born and raised in Korea, moved to the U.S. at the age of thirty, and now stands somewhere between the two countries.

I moved the stage of my life—from New York to California. People often ask me why I left New York if I loved it so much. Across the pages of this book, I want to slowly unfold the answer to that question.
California was not just a city, but a massive world of its own. New York was the very first place I arrived at in the United States. And I lived there for 12 years. During that time, I fell in love with traveling, movies, and music. Loving something ultimately drives you to create. I started a YouTube channel to record my travels and life through video, while also introducing old movies and music. Before I knew it, people began calling me "Cho PD." I liked that name. It wasn't a grand title, but rather a name that naturally stuck to someone who constantly records things.
Today, I work as a travel planner. The people I met on the road, the stories they shared, and the moments steeped in the city's alleyways—all of these have stacked up neatly inside me. This book is the very first collection of those accumulated records.
